I was so looking forward to having everyone out of school. I had been dreaming about what fun we would have. No one is interested in having fun. Kate wants to sleep until 3 pm every day. Hannah intends to spend every day with friends doing something. Katherine wants to read for pleasure and the Trips......well for once in their lives they are behaving. I hardly know they are here! They are all growing up and I'm depressed. I've been thinking picnics and visits to the pool. So far no takers. They are even helping around the house! What has happened? I'm confused.
My creative journal is coming along now that I've stopped reading it and my summer journal workshop is passing me by as I am two assignment pages behind. I have done my own thing with both ventures and I constantly have to tell myself not to start all over again. Am I having fun? Yes. Can I be a bit of a perfectionist? Ummm, that would be yes.
In the last couple of days, I have made strawberry/rhubarb jam (yummy) and traumatized my children with a crock pot vegetarian lasagna. I have attempted to guilt my eldest daughters into doing the summer journal pages. Kate made a cover sheet and went off to put together a power point presentation. She is giving herself assignments. Guilt hasn't worked on the other two. This wouldn't be so sad if I hadn't decided to devote time to my girls this summer after being so ill the last few years. My last hope is when I get to take them to the drive-in they will want to go. I need guilt lessons from my mother.
This week, I am going to the pool. With or without children. I'm going on a picnic. I may have to wait for my lovely husband to come home from Pittsburgh to have someone to go with but I am going to have fun despite them.

Love your humour, feel for you, I really do. The pain - my kids have elected not to live with me anymore - I can so picture your mum too! Motherhood! Hope one of them turns round and hugs you lots today.
Right now it would be nice if one of the six would just wake up!
time flys. i bet all the kids are really growing.
My boys are sleeping to lunch too - what to do?
Ahh summer just started they'll come around.
You write about it with such endearing honesty and humour, we all know what you mean - the sleeping in and Other Plans. Mine still hugs me when no-one is looking.
I hope you get a nice picnic or two,and other outings, once the novelty of summer freedom has worn off!
By the way, that was BEAUTIFUL little dress you made some weeks back, I hope it was appreciated.
Hey Jason! They are growing up. Seems like yesterday I had them at the church checking if Kate had her panties on or not or if she's ran off without shoes! Somewhere in our photos i have a picture of her talking nonsense to you and you giving it right back!
Beth did we sleep that much? What gives?
Hey Amy and Frances! I hope they come around soon.
My neice loves her dress and tres to wear it out all the time! She likes that she can wear high heels with it!
I love strawberry jam! I've made a lot this year. It is my husbands favorite. I looked for rhubarb but couldn't find any around.
There is nothing like a good swim!
Hi Cathy,
Funny how you have peace and cooperation in the house, and you're looking for a little stirring. I do hope you find a way to connect with the kids before the summer is over, and that you get to enjoy the pool with them (you just need a few 100 degree days for that to happen!)
I am very happy that your health has recovered, enough to practice your guilt skills (jab, jab, wink, wink)... a mother needs to be at least a little good at this to cut through that taking-Mom-for-granted phase.
I feel for you, Cathy... I know you must feel a need to make up for lost time, and have a greater than normal appreciation for the little things. I guarantee that things will liven up with the kids a bit once the lounging gets old, when the friends are gone on vacation, etc... You'll have plenty of chances to have fun and make memories...
David
PS -- I love S/R pie, but have never tasted the jam... I can only imagine! And veggie lasagna -- magnifique (Just discovered it last year, can you believe it?)!
